Mate is not really a tea. It's a tea-based beverage consumed mainly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil. It is brewed from the dried leaves and stem pieces of a perennial tree, Ilex Paraguarensis. The name MATE comes from the Quicha Indian word 'mati'. This word means gourd, or in many places a pumpkin head, and is a testimony to the fact that the Indians, and the colonists who followed their example, drank this tea from drinking gourds.
The active ingredient in mate tea, mateine, belongs to the group of methylxanthines and is therefore related to caffeine in coffee and theobromine in tea. However, mateine has a different effect on the body than tea or coffee. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant, but it can make you nervous and jittery. The theobromine in tea has fewer side effects, but is not as effective. Mate, on the other hand, is just as stimulating as coffee and has no side effects at all.
Unlike caffeine, it gives you a restful sleep. Pleasant, not strong diuretic, relaxes the peripheral blood vessels without having a strong effect on the part of the brain connected to the spinal cord and the heart
It contains significant amounts of minerals (potassium, sodium, manganese, magnesium) and vitamins (vitamins A, B1, B2, C and riboflavin). It contains 11 polyphenols with strong antioxidant properties..
Mate tea has effects on:
- on the nervous system
It works like a regulator: stimulating the tired nervous system and calming the over-excited. Our knowledge of the effects of mate is limited so far, and observations have only focused on behavioural changes. They show increased vitality and concentration, reduced tendency to nervousness, agitation and worry, and reduced mental and physical fatigue. It is particularly effective in depression. This can of course be a direct or indirect result of increased energy levels.
- on the stomach and intestinal tract
The results show an immediate and significant improvement in digestion and recovery of damaged, diseased stomach and intestinal tissues. Occasional or chronic constipation can be easily eliminated by consuming mate. Mate seems to work mainly by loosening the bowel contents, but it also stimulates to some extent the normal movement of the bowels.
- on the heart
Many types of heart failure have been prevented by the consumption of mate because it provides most of the nutrients needed for the heart to function. It also increases the oxygen supply to the heart, especially during stress or exercise.
- on metabolism
Mate has become the drink of choice for bodybuilders and all those who exercise. Its effects on metabolism include maintaining the breakdown of carbohydrates during exercise. This leads to more calories being burned, increases the efficiency of blood circulation and prevents the build-up of lactic acid, which leads to muscle fatigue. It is also very popular in Germany as a general consumer product.
- on the immune system
A recurring finding in South American literature is that mate boosts the body's immune responses and increases natural resistance to disease. This leads to rapid healing and recovery.
Maté tea contains a high concentration of polyphenol antioxidants. According to the "Journal of Food Science", the dried leaf of maté contains 92 mg of chlorogenic acid antioxidants per gram, without catechins, making its antioxidant properties significantly different from other teas. According to some studies, mate can contain 90% more antioxidants than green tea.
The main active ingredient in mate is mateine, the relative of caffeine. It has a similar stimulant effect but is not addictive or insomniac. Similarly, it improves mental performance but lacks the crash that occurs after the positive effects of caffeine consumption. It regulates the nervous system and therefore has both a calming and stimulating effect.
It is very similar to green tea but with a lot more micronutrients. It contains significant amounts of minerals (potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium), vitamins (vitamins A, B1, B2, C and riboflavin) and polyphenols.
Western medicine has not yet discovered mate, but initial experience shows that it has an immediate effect on damaged, unhealthy stomach and intestinal tissues. It also helps them to rebuild. Good results have also been shown in the treatment of chronic constipation.
It reduces the tendency to nervousness and depression, and is a good mood enhancer.
It has been particularly quickly popular with athletes and computing professionals. The former because mate maintains the breakdown of carbohydrates during exercise, which gives them more energy while detoxifying and losing weight more efficiently. And the latter because it increases mental performance, but doesn't make you feel bloated and allows you to sleep.
Mate is usually consumed as a tea and traditionally served in a gourd (mate or calabash) and a metal straw (bombilla).
