Vitamin D3 4000 NE / (100 µg) - (2000 % *)

Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin, but a pre-hormone. It is produced in the body by UV-B radiation coming from the sun in a complex, multi-step process, mainly from cholesterol. Through diet, we only get 10-20% of the needed amount of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is an extremely multi-functional nutrient, directly affecting at least 2000 of the 30,000 genes in the human body. Vitamin D is needed for cell division, helps maintain healthy bones, teeth and muscle functions, and plays a key role in the normal function of the immune system.

Research shows that vitamin D also has antioxidant properties and can play a major role in the prevention of many modern diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, joint problems, obesity, depression and autoimmune diseases..

Vitamin D and the immune system

Vitamin D promotes healthy cell division, so it can also help protect against autoimmune diseases and less serious common colds and flu.

Vitamin D is essential for the activation of the T lymphocytes, the body's primary protectors. (a type of white blood cell). T-cells seek out and destroy viruses and bacteria that enter our bodies. This process, however, can only work properly in the presence of sufficient amounts of vitamin D, so vitamin D deficiency can also cause reduction in immune response to infections.

Studies have shown that vitamin D receptors in the immune system can help the immune system successfully fight prolonged and excessive inflammatory symptoms. Inflammation is often a major driver of contemporary chronic and autoimmune diseases. These include multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive diseases, as well as high blood pressure and other common conditions.

Vitamin D and insulin levels

Insulin deficiency or inadequate insulin secretion leads to diabetes or insulin resistance. Studies have shown that since calcium is essential for insulin secretion, vitamin D may contribute to the regulation of insulin secretion.

Adequate vitamin D supplementation can increase insulin sensitivity and also reduce the development of inflammation. Further studies have confirmed the key role of vitamin D in fighting both types of diabetes (type 1 and type 2 diabetes).

Vitamin D and the hormon system

Since vitamin D acts as a hormone in the human body and affects brain function, its absence is more likely to lead to mood disorders such as depression, severe mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, insomnia, anxiety and seasonal affective disorder, also known as 'winter blues', which is actually a serious condition affecting many people.

Vitamin D is necessary for the production of most hormones in our body, directly or indirectly. Its deficiency can, for instance, interfere with the proper production of testosterone and oestrogen, which can compromise the body's balance and cause unwanted conditions..

Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus

Vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium in bones. Calcitrol (converted vitamin D), together with parathyroid hormone, is responsible for maintaining proper calcium levels, and also affects other important vitamins and minerals (including vitamin K and phosphorus) that help maintain good health.

Vitamin D is partly responsible for maintaining phosphorus levels in the blood, and since vitamin D affects calcium's protein binding ability, it also has a major impact on vitamin K.

A lack of vitamin D can lead to weakened or deformed bones (osteomalacia and rickets). In addition, vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of developing osteomalacia and the risk of fractures or cracked bones.

Recent studies have shown that vitamin D at a daily intake of 800-5000 IU can improve musculoskeletal health, can naturally slow down the ageing process and reduce the risk of bone fractures in people over 65.

Low levels of vitamin D lead to hyperparathyroidism. (overactivity of the parathyroid gland). Hyperparathyroidism causes a decrease in the body's phosphorus stores. In addition to calcium and other compounds, phosphorus is responsible for the mineral supply of bones.

Vitamin D and cancer

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased risk of cancers, particularly breast, bowel, ovarian and prostate cancer. The correlation between the risk of breast, bowel and ovarian cancer and vitamin D is due to the effect of vitamin D on the cell cycle activity and the regulation of excess estrogen.

Vitamin D and the cardiovascular system

A growing number of studies suggest that there is a strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease, as vitamin D plays crucial role in regulating blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation.

Recent research remains inconclusive on the ability of vitamin D to prevent cardiovascular diseases and stroke, but it has been confirmed that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of death caused by Coronary artery disease and other heart problems. This is probably due to the fact that with sufficient amount of vitamin D in the body, calcium is less likely to be deposited on the walls of blood vessels.
